dips & SPREADS was conceived when two like-minded people (husband and wife) who are passionate about food came together. It’s a business that stems from a desire to make good, healthy, natural food that is easily available at affordable prices!
Our kids are notorious snackers; and as many parents know, in Sri Lanka snacks are usually short-eats, biscuits or other snacks,which contain copious amounts of salt, sugar or oil. The need to drive and instill healthy eating habits, needed to start in our home first. And admittedly it was a very gradual change, but we certainly wanted to contribute towards clean eating. And that was when we had an ‘epiphany’ to take something that was close to our hearts and turn it into a business.
In all honesty, like all good things, we can’t put a date to when it all started, but we reckon it was in late September 2019 – and we haven’t looked back since.
We take great pride in sourcing natural, clean ingredients, and this has resulted in us building great relationships with local vendors. On this journey we’ve also learned so much about our buys, ranging from the jars, labels, to the produce themselves. One of our foundations is to make healthy food available at affordable prices, so even though we strive to perfect the end–product in every way possible, we continue to keep our margins low.
Some call it OCD, but we like to call it perfection. We like to invest a lot of time and care in making our products. One of our very first products was hummus; which we not only made in multiple variants but localized some of the variants to appeal to our palette. Subsequently, we moved onto spreads, nut butters, pesto, granola, breakfast bars and bliss balls, and nibbles such as mixed nuts.
All of these contain a plethora of health benefits, but here are some that take the cake.
Hummus is a great source of vegetable protein and fiber – making it a best friend to many vegans. Every ingredient that goes into making hummus, provides a host of benefits; but chickpeas in themselves are high in iron, folate, phosphorus, vitamin B6, vitamin K, zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, choline, and selenium! The healthiest hummus are the ones which have the smallest ingredient lists, with no icky additives. Yes, they have a shorter shelf life, but if you are what you eat –wouldn’t you rather be fresh and natural?
How to enjoy your hummus:
- Hummus is best enjoyed as a dip with some crispy pita or crudités. But don’t stop there, they make great additions as a spread on wraps or sandwiches and are especially yummy in buddha bowls.
- At dips & SPREADS we offer your favorites such as the classic hummus, roasted garlic, roasted beetroot or our signature roasted Nai Miris hummus (it’s delectable – we promise you! And if you don’t believe us, our reviews are proof enough!)
Then we looked at the busy executive who has nothing short of unhealthy food for breakfast – that was when we came up with healthy substitutes for a ‘grab & go’ breakfast – bliss balls or granola.
Looking for a quick breakfast or a snack? Bliss Balls are the answer. Each ball packs in so much goodness and energy. Plus, these little power balls are a perfect place to land on before a meal, as an afternoon pick-me-up, or as a sweet treat! Due to their nature of slow release of energy, they also serve as great pre and post workout bites.
We have some pre-made flavors available such as Almond & Dark Chocolate, Choconut, peanut, coconut, and our newest addition, almond & coffee. You can also experiment flavors with our DIY bliss balls.
A healthy cereal but oh so crispy, crunchy & nutty! These are perfect packed into little jars to have at your desk or on the go. The recommended serving size is 100-150g, but hey we won’t judge!
Try this topped with milk or yogurt, some fruit, & a drizzle of honey. Yummo!
The dips & SPREADS granola has a unique texture and taste; with a wide variety of available flavors, ranging from our signature Nutty granola, to our newest Cashew & Jaggery.
Granola is known for its high fiber ingredients such as oats, nuts & seeds. These also contribute to the health properties that granola offers such as gut health improvement, reduction of cholesterol levels & blood sugar, and many antioxidants.
